Martin "Marty" Michelsen Obituary

Martin Anton Michelsen, 82, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 18,2024. He was a resident of Libby, Montana, where he lived a full and vibrant life.

Born in Glen Cove, New York, on April 9, 1942, Martin was known for his warm heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering kindness. He dedicated his life to his high school sweetheart, Sandy Michelsen, who lost her battle health earlier this year. Their enduring love was an inspiration to many and a testament to the beauty of a true partnership of 60 years.

Martin was proud to have worked for NASA during the Apollo missions, including the Saturn V missions and the beginning of the space shuttle program. His contributions to the space program were a point of pride for him and left a lasting impact on the world.

He had a great fondness for adventure and a love for the outdoors, often finding joy in hiking, camping, and exploring the natural beauty around him. This drive after he retired NASA brought him and his family to the Pacific Northwest. Were he discovered gold mining in the 80's. He later had several businesses with Sandy that served the community and brought out his artistic side. After many years of moving around the west He and Sandy settled in Libby.

He is survived by his sister Linnea Godwin, brother Alan Michelsen, son Mark Michelsen; daughter-in-law, Kelly Michelsen; and his three grandsons, Max, Taylor, and Derek, who will cherish his memory and the time they were fortunate enough to share with him.

A celebration of Martin’s life is scheduled for November at 2759 Kootenai River Road, with the exact date and time to be determined for this November 2024. This will be a potluck gathering, and the family looks forward to spending time with family and friends to honor Martin’s legacy.
