Dianne Marie Schermerhorn was born October 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Grant Leo and Elaine Louise Nelson. They moved to Eureka, Montana, with her little brother Mick in 1953. Dianne attended school in Eureka and graduated from high school in 1963. She went to Kinman Business School and used her skills to work various bookkeeping and office jobs over the years. She started dating Dexter Schermerhorn in 1963, and they married a year later, on July 4, 1964.
Buck (Cheryl) was the first born, followed by Andrea (Jeff Broom), Jennifer (John Hannay) and Jeff (Jen O.). Dianne and Dexter watched their family grow by welcoming nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and numerous extended family members. Dianne grew close with Dexter’s family, including his three brothers (Randy, Barry, Ray and wife Kathie) and sister (LeeAnn) along with all their children and grandchildren.
Dianne loved to celebrate milestones for all the kids (including family friends and neighbors) by getting their picture by the fireplace with a Polaroid camera. Her family and friends will always remember her with a full cookie jar, a cup of coffee and a smart-aleck comment at the ready. She had no filter for those close to her, but she spilled the truth if you sat down to chat. At the end of a good conversation, she would send everyone on their way with blessings and Holy Water from Lourdes, Knock and various other holy places around the world. People even drove out of their way on a trip to make sure they got a Dianne blessing. She said she never lost anyone that way.
Dianne had a great sense of courage and refused to give into her MS. She fought the disease every step of the way. Even when she started relying on her cart more, she wouldn’t let it stop her from doing daily projects like spray painting with the grandchildren. She also loved Seaside, Oregon, because she could zoom up and down the Prom in her cart and look at the ocean.
Dianne passed on July 6, 2023, at Mountain View Manor. A couple days prior, she was able to go for a drive to enjoy a Frontier burger and commemorate her 59th anniversary with Dexter and their copilot granddaughter Alex. It was one of her favorite places to gather with the family to celebrate birthdays and other events.
Dianne is survived by her husband; four children; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is proceeded in death by her parents and her brother Mick.
Services will be held at Our Lady of Mercy church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023, with the Rosary prior at 10:30 a.m.
