Obituary: Paul Elvin Gustafson (December 11, 1944 - March 30, 2024)

Paul Elvin Gustafson, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished brother, and dear friend, peacefully passed away on March 30, 2024, in Hayden, Idaho, at the age of 79. He was born on December 11, 1944, in Lytle Creek, California, to the late Paul and Mildred Gustafson.

In 1977, Paul and his beloved wife, Patricia, along with their young sons Michael and Paul, embarked on a new chapter in their lives, settling in the picturesque town of Libby, Montana. It was there, nestled among the majestic mountains, that Paul found his true sanctuary in nature's embrace.

Paul had a long career as a Laboratory Manager at St. John's Hospital in Libby, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his work. However, Paul's love for his family and the outdoors was paramount. Camping, backpacking, and fishing in the beauty of the mountains of Northwest Montana, he found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature.

Paul leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be forever cherished by his sons, Michael and Paul, and their respective partners, Cat and Kim. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn and Carol, numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity.  While we mourn the loss of Paul's earthly presence, we take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his loved ones who have gone before him.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mildred, and his sisters, Barbara and Darlene and his beloved wife, Patricia. Paul and Pat’s wishes were to have their ashes buried together in Libby, as well as scattered in the Cabinet Mountains surrounding Libby.

A graveside service celebrating Paul and Pat’s lives will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, 2 p.m. at the Libby Cemetery in Libby, Montana, officiated by Schnackenberg Funeral Home. There will be an informal gathering at the Switchback Bar and Grill following the service for any who would like to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity or cause of your choice.

Paul and Pat Gustafson's legacy of love and reverence for nature will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing them. May they rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the mountains and the small Montana town of Libby they held so dear.
